Christian Novel Review

Having always been an avid reader, since becoming a Christian I have found a wealth of reading material in Christian bookshops and in various second hand bookshops. I have found that in Christian novels one often finds truths that help in one’s Christian walk. I enjoy reading about how the various characters deal with life, and I also find I am the richer for reading a really good Christian novel. Certain authors, through their books, give you a real insight into their joys and struggles, which I find very interesting. The books which I am going to review are those which I have really enjoyed, and have read at least twice – some books, for example the “Mark of the Lion “ series by Francine Rivers, I have read at least five times each. The first books that I am going to talk about are the latest two novels by Francine Rivers,

WHEN THE FLAMES RAVAGED by RHONDA DRAGOMIR

Publication date 1/4/24
WHEN THE FLAMES RAVAGED by RHONDA DRAGOMIR is a beautifully written novel which really stirs one up as the author bases her story on the Hartford circus fire that took place on the sixth of July 1944. The deep Christian content and the way in which we really feel the characters’ emotions, make this an unforgettable read. It is a story about incredible courage and unconditional  love played out against the reality of life during World War 11 and the excitement of the circus coming to town to bring some well needed cheer.
Hank Webb, or Fraidy Freddy the clown, is afraid of his past catching up with him, and has run away to the circus. It is there that he shows his true metal by saving as many people as he can including Evelyn Halstead’s niece and nephew.I love to see his caring heart as he loves and supports Evelyn, making her feel safe, and is the one who gets Lily to talk again. He also never gives up hope of finding Jamie…….
We are reminded throughout of relevant Scriptures such as “greater love hath no man than this; that a man lay down his life for his friends” and Cowper’s hymn about God’s mysterious ways, as Hank and Evelyn struggle with their faith in a God who would allow such devastation. We wonder if their fledgling romance will stand up to all the stress and to the secret that Hank has hidden for so long……
I cannot recommend this lovely novel strongly enough. It is a heart wrenching story but hope shines throughout.
I was given a free copy of the book by NetGalley from Barbour Publishing. The opinions in this review are completely my own.

LOVE IN TANDEM by BECCA KINZER

Publication date 2/4/24
LOVE IN TANDEM by BECCA KINZER  is a fun romcom with charming characters and some hilarious moments. There is also a deeper meaning as two people with opposite interests ride a tandem bicycle for ten days, hoping to win a large sum of money, and learning a lot about themselves and one another in the process. There is also an emphasis on faith and prayer in a person’s life.
Charlotte Carter desperately needs money to build up the Bailey Springs school’s music division or she will lose her job. She is determined to live in Bailey Springs near her family for the reat of her life. Zach Bryant, her ex fiance’s brother, is adventurous and determined to not live in Bailey Springs. He is only there for his brother Ben’s wedding to his ex girlfriend. Due to confusion and motherly interference they end up as a couple at said wedding and the adventure begins…..
Love in Tandem is an enjoyable read with some laugh out loud moments.
I was given a free copy of the book by NetGalley from Tyndale House Publishers. The opinions in this review are completely my own.

A LOVE DISCOVERED by TRACIE PETERSON

Publication date 5/3/24
A LOVE DISCOVERED by TRACIE PETERSON is the first novel in The Heart of Cheyenne series. It is a most enjoyable read and I cannot wait for the next book in the series!
The story starts in 1867 in Independence, Indiana, with a marriage of convenience between two very good friends, Marybeth Kruger, who is afraid that, as an unmarried woman with no income, she will lose Carrie, her precious little sister, and:lawman Edward Vogel, who has been invited by his mentor and best friend to move to Cheyenne  to join him in trying to keep the peace in that wild railroad town. In order to take up this appointment, Edward needs a wife. All goes reasonably well, in spite of the danger of living in this lawless place, until they start having feelings for each other……
It is a story about friendship, unselfish love, and overcoming fear and anger by putting one’s faith in God.  The characters are unforgettable and their emotions are beautifully potrayed. The Christian message is strong and the title is very apt.
I found A Love Discovered both exciting and inspirational, and cannot recommend the book highly enough.
I was given a free copy of the book by NetGalley from Bethany House Publishers. The opinions in this review are completely my own.

DOUBLE THE LIES by PATRICIA RAYBON

DOUBLE THE LIES,  the sequel to All That is Secret by PATRICIA RAYBON, is an enjoyable and exciting suspense novel in which self appointed detective Annalee Spain, a young coloured professor of theology, is thrust into another dangerous and nail biting case when she walks home from the library with the distraught Rebecca Mann, to find Jeffrey Mann lying in a pool of blood on the kitchen floor.
The story is full of Christian truth and is based on God’s exhortation in Exodus chapter twenty verses thirteen to sixteen: “Thou shalt not kill. Thou shalt not commit adultery. Thou shalt not steal.Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.”
There are many of the above “shalt nots” occurring in the various characters’ lives, with both Annalee and her “nice young man” Paster Jack Blake being tempted to stray…..
I partiularly like the way this author writes, her wealth of characters with their various choices and emotions, and the clever plot that keeps us guessing until the end. The story takes place in Denver in 1924 with the KKK and their hatred of coloureds, Jews and Catholics causing huge racial tension, and the laws forbidding mixed marriages in operation.
I highly recommend Double The Lies as a great read.

TRUTH BE TOLD by PATRICIA RAYBON

Publicationdate 11/6124
TRUTH BE TOLD by PATRICIA RAYBON is the third novel in the Annalee Spain amateur detective series. As is the case in the first two books, the  author follows hard after Scriptural truth and bases this one on John  chapter 15 and psalm twenty seven. In the same way that some plants are dangerous, hiding their poison under blooms and leaves, the same can be said of some humans. Things are not always as they seem, as Annalee follows clues to uncover a young woman’s murder. Whereas no human being can ever be perfect, we see how fear can silence even those who are trying to live upright lives. “People kill people - or kill other people’s dreams, hopes and spirits, even kill their accomplishments - for fear of losing something themselves.” There is intimidation and blackmail, but Annalee refuses to give up on finding justice for Prissy Mack. She says, “I am warned and I’m scared. But I won’t turn around.”
The characters are unforgettable and very real, for example Annalee herself and her pastor boyfriend Jack Blake, her scruffy little partner in crime, Eddie Brown Jr from the Denver Boys’ home, and her friend Edna Smallworth, to name but a few.
Annalee invites Edna Smallworth to attend a function with her at the Coates’ mansion, where  Cooper Coates’ daughter, Melody, finds a dead young Negro girl in her secret hideaway in the garden. Here we come across the snobbish African American upper class at its worst as they joke about the young girl and carry on with their insipid conversations. This is the time when the KKK and racial prejudice are prevalent, but there is also a rich Negro upper class in Denver who cling hard to their status….
I am not telling you any more for fear of spoiling things for you.
I cannot recommend Truth Be Told highly enough for the exciting and thought provoking story with its strong Christian message.
I was given a free copy of the book by NetGalley from Tyndale House Publishers. The opinions in this review are completely my own.

The SONGBIRD OF HOPE HILL by KIM VOGEL SAWYER

Publication date 9/4/24
THE SONGBIRD OF HOPE HILL by KIM VOGEL SAWYER is a beautifully written story of redemption and forgiveness, with unforgettably real characters and a sweet romance. The Christian message, based on Romans 10:11,”……Whosoever believeth on Him shall not be ashamed”, is an integral part of the story, which takes place in Tulsey, Texas, in 1895.
Isaiah and Ophelia Overly run a refuge for women who have escaped prostitution, where they are taught the truth of God’s Word and are educated so that they can find honest work.
Lida Holland is a hardened “madam” who runs the brothel, Lida’s Palace, where Birdie Clarkson has sought refuge after her father’s death and her mother’s abandonment. Isaiah and his son Ephraim manage to encourage Birdie to leave the brothel and go with them to Hope Hill…..
Ephraim, who is a musician and runs the choir that sings for his father’s meetings, is blown away by Birdie’s beautiful voice…..
Secrets are uncovered, and even with the prejudice and hostility that abounds amongst the population of the area and some  “good Christians”, there is hope for these bruised souls who have been give the choice to follow Christ…..
This is a lovely story and I do not want to spoil your read by telling you too much.
I cannot recommend The Songbird of Hope Hill highly enough.
I was given a free copy of the book by NetGalley and WaterBrook & Multnomah. The opinions in this review are completely my own.

WHEN THE WATERS CAME by CANDICE SUE PATTERSON

Publication date 2/1/24
WHEN THE WATERS CAME by CANDICE SUE PATTERSON is a well written novel that takes  place in Johnstown during the horrific floods that destroyed the town in May 1889. The flood and its aftermath is well documented, with relevant quotations starting each chapter. While there are some people mentioned who were actually there at the time, the story revolves around Pastor Montgomery Childs and Red Cross nurse, Annamae Worthington.
I like the way the author documents the emotional upheaval in her characters’ lives, as they battle to come to terms with devastating loss, and also the fact that the devastation was caused by the greed and selfishness of the members of the South Fork Fishing and Hunting Club, one of whom is Monty’s despicable uncle Henry. When Monty was ready to give up he remembered that  “the Lord had called him to help save others’ lives. He had to at least try.” The beautiful Red Cross nurse has a lot to do with his recovery. Both Monty and Annamae need to forgive and forget the past. Annamae is still very bitter about her father’s death which causes her to act unwisely….
I am not going to tell you any more for fear of spoiling things for you.
I highly recommend this heart wrenching and also heart warming read for the well researched story and the strong Christian message flowing through the book.
I was given a free copy of the book by NetGalley from Barbour Publishing. The opinions in this review are completely my own.

ONE FINAL TARGET by JANICE CANTORE

ONE FINAL TARGET by JANICE CANTORE is a wonderfully exciting read which will keep you guessing right to the end! I cannot recommend the novel highly enough, especially for the strong Christian message ; for example, when Detective Sam Gresham, who has been through a similar experience to Sergeant Jodi King, answers her many “why” questions about God with, “God is good….even when life isn’.” He himself carries guilt over his partner’s dearh and is therefore in a position to help the young sergeant who is riddled with guilt after being the only one in her RAT team to survive an explosive that destroys drug dealer Norman Hayes’ cabin when they are about to take him into custody. In fact, Jodie calls Sam her “guardian angel” as he seems to always be at the right place just in time to save her life…..
I am not going to tell you any more for fear of spoiling things fo you.

THE CLOSE OF THE AGE by DR LILY CORSELLO

I found THE CLOSE OF THE AGE by DR LILY CORSELLO to be a breath of fresh air! The novel is very relevant for the times in which we live with “wars and rumours of war”, and it is a wake up call as the story follows biblical End Times prophecy, starting with the Rapture of believers and going on through the horrors of the Tribulations until the Thousand Year Reign of Christ on earth.
Ben Goldberg is left behind with his father Simon when his mother, a Jewish believer in Christ, disappears together with her Messianic congregation. Ben’s girlfriend Elira, who is very intelligent and works for the Department of Defense, is sure there must be some scientific reason for what has happened and is also sure that the charismatic leader of the New World Order, Ibrahim Mizrah, will bring order to the chaos…….
We see man’s depravity reaching a new level as those who have become believers since the disappearances are hunted like animals…..
I am not going to tell you any more for fear of spoiling things for you.
I have read and enjoyed all the Left Behind books I could lay my hands on, and am really glad to have found this one. I highly recommend The Close of the Age as an excellent and inspiring read.
I was given a free copy of the book by NetGalley. The opinions in this review are completely my own.

FINDING GRACE by LARRY RANDOLPH and JENNIFER MARSHALL BLEAKLEY

Publication date 17/10/23
FINDING GRACE by LARRY RANDOLPH and JENNIFER MARSHALL BLEAKLEY is the beautiful true story of how Larry and Susan Randolph were led to start Canines for Christ and how this ministry “brought people to God one paw at a time.” As we read these incredible stories we are “amazed at what God can do through willing heart and wagging tail.” As the dogs and their owners work together to show God’s love to those who need it, we see the Holy Spirit move in wonderful ways, bringing peace and restoration to those who are hurting. The men and women who work for Canines for Christ are true ambassadors for Christ alongside their beloved pets. I like the way there is no rush involved as both man and dog take time to make friends and love on those  they minister to. In fact someone gave thes dogs the name -  “Jesus in fur!”
I am a dog lover, but this book will speak to anyone who cares about their fellow man. Also this ministry is an excellent way of spreading the gospel of Christ.
I cannot reommend Finding Grace highly enough as a truly inspirational read.
I was given a free copy of the book by NetGalley from Tyndale House Publishers. The opinions in this review are completely my own.

MARSHALING HER HEART by MARY CONNEALY

Publication date 17/10/23
MARSHALING HER HEART is the third novel in the Wyoming Sunrise series by MARY CONNEALY. Although it can stand alone, I am glad I have read all three books in this exciting and inspirational series.
The story takes place in 1871 in Pine Valley, where, although the Wainwright boothers who led the Deadeye Gang are dead, there is still fear that the gang is alive  and well, and ready to strike again. Becky Pruitt, who left her abusive father and started up her own very successful ranch, with ex U S Marshall Nate Paxton working for her, agrees to letting her ranch be the headquarters for the search, Nate’s brother Sal and two other marshalls work under cover as cow hands on the ranch to follow a lead…..
Becky’s two friends, Mariah, who runs a blaksmithing business, and Nell, who is Justice of the Peace in the area, are both married, making Becky feel lonely.
All three women are good examples of women’s liberation…
I like the godly characters (althugh of couse there are also viklains in the mix) and the strong Christian message of the importance of forgiveness and of honouring one’s parents, rnnning through the book….
I am not going to tell you any more for fear of spoiing things for you.

DYSFUNCTION JUNCTION by ROBIN W PEARSON

Publication date 6/2/24
DYSFUNCTION JUNCTION by ROBIN W PEARSON is the story of the three Winters sisters, Frances Mae, Annabelle and Charlotte, who have been badly affected by their mother’s narcisistic selfishness and chronic neglect. Frankie,  the oldestt, virtually brought them up with the help of Miss Hattie, a godly neighbour, and is now the mother of four who she is determined to raise with the loving care she never received herseflf.
Annabelle is married, with a stepson she adores, and is pregnant. She battles with rejection, especially because she doesnot know who her father was.
Charlotte is a successful psychologist who is very unsure of herself, although she gives a different impression. She is determined to never marry. When Miss Hattie telephones them with a request, they get together around the problem of “What do we do with Mama?”……
Whereas the glimpses into their horrible childhood are sad, I love their heated and sometimes amusing conversations as they try to come to terms with this problem and how their decision will affect their grown up lives. As old memories come to light they find it hard to forgive their mother. As Frankie says to Charlotte, “I’m still at that junction, dear sister, between hurtin’ and healin’. Give me time.”
I like to see how the Lord deals with each of them, drawing them to Himself.  In this inspirational and well written book we are reminded that “families are part of God’s design. Although they are flawed they are beautiful. “
I cannot recommend Dysfunction Junction highly enough for the heartwarming story, unforgettable characters and strong Christian message.
I was given a free copy of the book by NetGalley from Tyndale House Publishers. The opinions in this review are completely my own.

APPALACHIAN SONG by MICHELLE SHOCKLEE

Publication date 3/10/23
APPALACHIAN SONG by MICHELLE SHOCKLEE is a most enjoyable and inspirational read, with a heartwarming story, wonderful characters and a strong Christian message from Romans chapter eight verses fourteen to sixteen, where we are reminded of the Fatherhood of God and the believer’s adoption into His family.
In 1943 we come across five aging Jenkins spinsters who live in the  mountains of Tennessee. When a young pregnant girl with a bullet in her shoulder comes out of the woods, a victim of her father’s wrath, they take her in and nurse her back to health. Bertie Jenkins is a midwife and delivers Songbird’s son. …
The story is about adoption and family relationships and I love the way the author has based her story on God’s love and faithfulness…
.In 1973 Reese Chandler, a midwife who was also adopted, is asked by Walker Wylie, a famous  singer from Nashville, to help him find out about his birth mother……
I am not  going to tell you any more for fear of spoiling things for you, excepting to say that I loved everything about Allalachian Song and cannot recommend it highly enough.
I was given a free copy of the book by NetGalley from Tyndale House Publishers. The opinions in this review are completely my own.

ALL MY SECRETS by LYNN AUSTEN

Publication date 6/2/24
ALL MY SECRETS by LYNN AUSTEN is a beautifully written historical romance novel that takes place in New York during the Gilded Age, at the end of the nineteenth century. There is a strong Christian message of redemption and forgiveness together with that of making one’s life count by looking after those less fortunate rather than wasting money on living a lavish lifestyle and trying to impress one’s wealthy acquaintances. There is also the horror of losing one’s reputation and providing gossip for the gossipmongers. Society “friends” tend to be rivals who live for the latest bit of gossip.
Adelaide Stanhope is the third daughter of A.B. and Sylvia Stanhope, and when her father dies unexpectedly, she, her mother and grandmother, are left in a bad financial situation due to the family inheritance being entailed to a male heir.
Sylvia is desperate to keep up appearances and spends what little money they have to try and find a rich husband for her daughter, determined to keep the grand Stanhope mansion and give Addie the opulent life she is used to. This is the second time Sylvia has lost everything.
Grandmother Junietta, however, after being blackmailed by her father in law into a loveless marriage, sees this as an opportuity to escape from prison for Addie where she will be able to marry for love and even pursue a career if she wants to do so. It is hard for Addie who dearly loves her mother and feels she is honour bound to save the family. She also dearly loves her grandmother and does not want to'disappoint her.
Junietta is very natural and outspoken. The thing that is most important to her is the Stanhope Foundation which she started and which she runs. She hopes to instil her ideas into Addie whilst telling her her rather scandalous life story and showing her what life is like on the other side of town. She encourages Sylvia to tell her daughter about her past and hidden dreams.
Another person who has an important part to play is the young lawyer, Howard Forsythe, whose father is a minister and who advocates prayer and quotes Scripture and is also rather good looking. He is helping Sylvia sell excess furniture and manage her money.
This novel gives one a great deal of food for thought as we watch the characters make life changing decisions, some leading to feelings of guilt which can only be  dealt with when taken to the Lord in repentance. It is interesting to see the secrets of this proud old family unfold…..
I am not going to tell you any more for fear of spoiling things for you.
Lyyn Austen is one of my favourite authors and I cannot recommend this latest novel of hers highly enough.
I was given a free copy of the book by NetGalley from Tyndale House Publishers. The opinions in this review are completely myown.

OF LOVE AND TREASON by JAMIE OGLE

Publication date 23/2/24
OF LOVE AND TREASON by JAMIE OGLE is based on the story behind Valentine’s day and is a really worthwhile read as we are taken into the Roman world in the third century AD where a group of believers, led by Valentine Favius Diastems, meet at the house of Marius and Martha and their friends. It is an extremely difficult and dangerous time for Christians who are being persecuted when they refuse to recant theit trust in the One True God. Not only does the emperor feel that Rome is losing strength because people are neglecting the worship of their many deities, but he has also banned marriage in otder to keep men from getting out of military service. Val is a notarius who performs marriages at night…..
Iris is blind. Her father, Quintus Magius, the jailer, is heavily in debt from spending money on offerings to the gods, who are failing to restore her sight. However, when Val prays things happen that change their lives forever…..
The story is strongly based on Romans 8:28, “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose,” and other Bible verses that remind us of God’s goodness and power. We see the courage of these Christians as they stand together praising God and serving one another and those less fortunate.
There is not only faith and unconditional love but there is also berayal and brutality.
Of Love and Treason is really excellent biblical fiction and a book I highly recommend to anyone who enjoys this genre.
I was given a free copy of the book by NetGalley from Tyndale House Publishers. The opinions in this review are completely my own.

A WINTER by the SEA by JULiE KLASSEN

Publication date 5/12/23
A WINTER by the SEA  comes after The Sisters of Sea View and is the second novel in the On Devonshire Shores series by Julie Klassen.  The book can easily stand alone, but I am so glad I have read the two books in sequebce, becoming reacquainted with the interesting and sometimes eccentric characters from the first novel and coming accross some new ones. Needless to say that I am looking forward to the third book book in the series.
The Summers sisters are taken aback when the Duke and Duchess of Kent, together with their baby daughter, the future Queen Victoria, move into Woolbrook Cottage in Sidmouth and board three of their staff with them at Sea View Cottage. This makes life very interesting for everyone involved……
The story is historically based, wth excerpts from Queen Victoria’s biographies and guide books on Sidmouth and its surroundings. There are also quotations from Jane Austen, especially from Persuasion, and some well chosen scriptures. In fact the book has a strong Christian message of unconditional love, of laying one’s life down for others, of living in truth and taking care of the poor.
In the well described setting on the Devonshire coast we come across strong friendships, family relationships, both good and bad, true love and betrayal, superstition and even smuggling. There is also gossip and the self importance of those who look down on the less fortuate.
I really loved this book and cannot recommend it highly enough.
I was given a free copy of the book by NetGalley from Bethany House Publishers. The opinions in this review are completely my own.

RUNNING TO YOU by ROBIN PATCHEN

RUNNING TO YOU is the first novel in the Wright Heroes of Maine series by ROBIN PATCHEN, and although it follows on from A Mountain Too Steep, it can easily stand alone. I guarantee you will not be able to put the book down - it is a real page turner with mystery,  murder, and danger. Opposed to this is the strength of unconditional love and trust in the Lord.
The story takes place in Shadow Cove where Sam Wright, who has become wealthy from concentrating on his business, lives very comfortably in a huge house. His brother Daniel, who is a doctor, and his wife Camilla,  are staying with him while they look for a house in the area. Sam feels he is a failure, especially since his girlfriend, Eliza Pelletier, disappeared without a trace five years ago. He hardly socializes any more and  keeps away from his parents and brothers as well.
Imagine his surprise when a very bedraggled and beaten up Eliza arrives on his doorstep, suffering from amnesia!.….
Sam is now a Christian and is not sure how to respond to his ex for whom he still has feelings. Where has she been and how did she find him? And why did she run away in the first place? With her nightmares it is obvious that something has triggered her fear, and as her memory gradually comes back a horrific story is uncovered……
They are being followed, Eliza has a secret and her loved ones are in danger. Will Sam get over his jealousy in time to step in with his brothers and save the woman he loves?……
I am not going to tell you any more as I do not want to spoil things for you.
I cannot recommend Running to You highly enough for the exciting story, courageous and interesting characters and strong Christian message.  I cannot wait for the nest book in the series.

KNOWING YOU by TRACIE PETERSON

Publication date 7/11/23
KNOWING YOU is the third novel in the Pictures of the Heart series by TRACIE PETERSON, but it can easily stand alone. It is an interesting book with great characters, a well thought out, plot and a strong Christian message. The author has obviously done a great deal of research on Japanese history and customs.
The story takes place in 1909 in Seattle at the Alaska-Yukom-Pacific Exposition, where there is a special Japanese exhibit. May Parker, who works as a camera girl for Fisher Photography, is particularly interested in all things Japanese, having a Japanese mother, and is delighted when she is offered 100 dollars to do a detailed painting of a rare suit of samurai armour for a couple who claim it has ties to their family.
Lee Munro, who May has not seen since they lived next door to one another ten years ago, is a police detective who is working at the expo, and the two friends are delighted to meet up again…….
It is a time when there is little tolerance for the Japanese and Chinese, and we see this prejudice when the Munros sell their house and move away because they do not want to live next door to the Parkers, thus separating the two young friends.
I like to see how Lee and May, as strong Christians, deal with the animosity they receive from Lee’s family…….
The story is exciting, with Lee chasing a well known forger who has been eluding capture for some time, and who seems to have his eye on the valuable samurai armour……
I like the camaraderie amongst the Camera Girls who watch out for and pray for one another…
This is a most enjoyable book and one I highly recommend to anyone wh enjoys this genre.
I was given a free copy of the book by NetGalley from Bethany House Publishers. The opinions in this review are completely my own.

KINGDOM OF LOVE by TRACIE PETERSON

Publication date 1/11/23
KINGDOM OF LOVE by TRACIE PETERSON is a collection of three medieval romances with interesting characters and a real feel for what life was like in the fourteenth century, with the dogmatism of the church and the superstition of the people, as opposed to the true message of Christianity which comes out so beautifully in each of the heroes’ lives. The author has obviously done a great deal of research into life at the time which I found really fascinating.
The first two books run into one another as we meet the first two courageous women, Arianne and then Helena who each end up at Gavenshire Castle after escaping abuse at the hands of family members. The third courageous woman is Mary Beckett, the daughter of physician Guy Beckett, who was murdered for his desire to find out more about the human body, in order to be able to heal those who were dying of the plague. …….
The stories are exciting and well told with the Christian message of salvation, redemption and Christ’s love and forgiveness shining brightly against the backdrop of such a dark period of history. I love the three romances and the theme of sacrificial love flowing through the book.
I found the book most enjoyable and inspirational and cannot recommend it highly enough to anyone who enjoys this genre.
I was given a free copy of the book by NetGalley from Barbour Publishing. The opinions in this review are completely my own.

CAPTURING HOPE by ANGELA K COUCH

Publication date 1/11/23
CAPTURING HOPE is another beautifully written WW11 novel by ANGELA K COUCH  in which, whilst we see the horrors inflicted on the Polish people and the Jews and the destruction of Poland by the Germans, we also see unconditional love and bravery which is heartwarming in such horrific circumstances.
Lady Nadezhka Roenne, or Nadia as she is called, is not impressed when she meets her father’s latest protege, American photographer David Reid, who arrives at a formal occasion at their baronial hall in a brown tweed jacket. She is very aware of her family’s nobility and looks down on him.
It is the 31st August, the day before Germany’s invasion of Poland. The place is attacked, Baron Roenne is shot and his dying wish is for David to see to it that his wife and daughter reach London safely. This leads to an adventure that will grip you from start to finish…….
David is full of guilt for something that happened to his cousin that his family still blames him for and is terrified of failing to keep Nadia safe. Nadia proves difficult to persuade and does not want to leave her dead father, the parent that she has always wanted to impress. Nadia wishes that she came from a loving family and her only idea of love and normal families is what she reads aboutin novels.
I like to see how how hope builds up in Nadia, whose name means hope, as she is influenced by David’s desperate prayers and his return to trust in God, and as they both learn to put others before themselves.
There is so much more to the story but I do not want to spoil things for you and will not tell you any more.
I cannot recommend this lovely and truly inspirational book highly enough.
I was given a free copy of the book by NetGalley from Barbour Publishing. The opinions in this review are completely my own.

JULIA MONROE BEGINS AGAIN by REBEKAH MIlLLET

Publication date 24/10/23
JULIA MONROE BEGINS AGAIN by REBEKAH MIlLLET is a most enjoyable novel with hilarious moments as we follow Julia Monroe’s thoughts, emotions and conversations, even those she has with God, as she tries to understand why her philandering ex, Green Beret Samuel Reed, has shown up in her life after so many years. Underneath all this humour, the author shows us the depth of their emotional turmoil, beautifully balanced with a strong sense of God at work in their lives. Add to this Julia’s cantankerous, chain smoking mother, her equally cantankerous dog, Chewy, and Samuel’s rigid army veteran father, Teddy, to name a few! When her best friend Kate and her college going sons start pushing Julia in a direction that frightens her, we wonder how things are going to turn out between her and the devastatingly handsome and apologetic Samuel……
I absolutely loved this book and cannot recommend it highly enough. It is both an entertaining and inspirational read.

THE WIND BLOWS IN SLEEPING GRASS by KATIE POWNER

Publication date 26/9/23
THE WIND BLOWS IN SLEEPING GRASS by KATIE POWNER  is a delightful read with humour and depth as the author beautifully describes the life and emotions of fifty year old Pete Ryman, who lives quietly in Sleeping Grass,Montana with his pot bellied pig, Pearl, and his friend Windy Ray, whose deep faith in the Creater and his words of biblical wisdom are brought out at just the right time. The characters, both human and animal, in this poignant story, will live on in your heart….
Pete has a very low self image due to ongoing rejection and being told that he will never make anything of his life. In fact he has noticed that “In his experience, people’s interest in him never lasted long.” His rage against life’s unfairness has not made things easy in the past.
Working as a garbage man, cleaning up other people’s messes, he finds all kinds of treasure in what people throw away. As Windy Ray says “everything the Creator mekes has value, but a man must choose whether he wants to see it.”
As Pete’s world becomes enlarged with new people coming into his life, there is not only a great deal to forgive, but there are more people to love……….
I am not going to spoil the read for you by telling you any more.
I cannot recommend The Wind Blows in Sleeing Grass highly enough.

SKYE FALL by PAIGE EDWARDS

Publcatio date 24/10/23
SKYE FALL by PAIGE EDWARDS is a beautifully written romantic novel based on  a strong Christian message of redemption. Dealing with abuse, police corruption, politics and terrorism, as contrasted with the sacrificial love of family and those in need, the story is most inspirational. I was hooked from the befginning and could not put this lovely and exciting book down! The author has not only painted beautiul scenes, mainly of the Scottish countryside, but she has taken us through her charaters’ very real fears and struggles ….
I like to see the British nobility portrayed as normal people, the love Ben has for his father and siblings, and the love Isla has for her family by keeping away so that they are not attacked by Shay and his cohorts. Ben’s caring and unselfish character is a portrait of a real man who knows who he is in Christ…..
I was really moved by this book and cannot recommend it highly enough.
I was given a free copy of the book by NetGalley from Covenant Communications. The opinios in this review are completely my own.

GARDEN OF THE MIDNIGHTS by HANNAH LINDER is a beautifully written historical romantic suspense novel with unforgettable characters, a well worked out and exciting plot, and a strong Christian message, mainly about the importance of forgiveness, running through it.
The story takes place in 1809. There is snobbery, pride, blackmail, jealousy, gossip, hatred and much more, as those of the ton look down on anyone less fortunate than themselves. Edward  Gresham will do anything to avoid losing his important position in society and his inheritance….
I am not going to tell you any more for fear of spoiling things for you.

THE LEGACY OF LONGDALE MANOR by CARRIE TURANSKY

Publicatiodate 26/9/23
THE LEGACY OF LONGDALE MANOR is a beautifully written dual timeline novel by CARRIE TURANSKY in which the characters in 1912 tie in very well with those in 2012. There are sweet romances in each timeline, and the theme of forgiveness and trust in God’s direction is strong as the charatcters, whose struggles and heartaches are well portrayed, work through their problems. The theme of God being the only perfect Father comes through very strongly.
In 2012 Gwen Morris, a junior specialist for art history and antiques, is sent by her grandfather, Lionel Morris, to Lilly Benderley, an old friend of his, to appraise the antiques at her home, Longdale Manor near Keswick in the Lake District, and prepare them for auction Lilly’s grandson David Bradford is planning to turn the beautiful manor house into a luxury hotel, thus saving his grandmother’s legacy.
After finding out that her father, who she has never met, may live in the area, Gwen  is determined to find him…….
In 1912 Charlotte Harper and her family are left destitute at the death of her father, the well known evangelist, Henry Harper, who collapses at the Keswick Convention and dies soon after. Charlotte comes across some letters that show that her father was not the godly man she thought he was and keeps this secret from her mother and brother and younger sister. The family moves in with her mother’s friend Jenny Storey and her family on their sheep farm, hoping that grandfaher Benderley, who never approved of his daughter’s marriage to Henry, will take them in. Charlotte loves being on thr farm, and Ian and she become good friends, and possibly something more, but she is afraid of him turning out to be like her father…..
We see the trust issues throughout these two stories, and the effect that being fatherless has on a person. …..
This is a most enjoyable, thought provoking and inspirational novel, and I cannot recommend it highly enough.
I was given a free copy of the book by NetGalley from Bethany House Publishers. The opinions in this review are completely my own.

THE STARLET SPY by RACHEL SCOTT McDANIEL

Publication date 1/8/23
THE STARLET SPY by RACHEL SCOTT McDANIEL is a beautifully written and well researched WW11 novel that is a real page turner.
Amelie Blake is a succesful film star, well known for being a brainless blond, who wishes she could do something more for the war  effort than generate funds. Her wish comes true, but in a different way than she expects, when she is recruited as a spy and arrives in her native Sweden to search for a briefcase containing the highly explosive scientific documents written by Dr Nils Bohr and keep them out of the hands of the Nazis. Her acting ability is tested to the utmost as this “blond bimbo” with the photographic memory finds herself in all kinds of dangerous situations, not knowing who she can trust.
With the rumour of her mother’s so-called illness hitting the news, forty-eight hours training at The Farm, a gun strapped to her thigh and a set of lockpicks, she sets of on her mission, just as Esther in the Bible set off to save the Jews.
A contrived meeting with Finn Ristaffson, whose boatyard was the scene of the landing of the Jewish refugees and the missing briefcase, leads to her staying in his home with his mother Anna and meeting all kinds of people , some of whom, including Finn, are on the persons of interest list she has been given.
I really enjoy the way the book is full of biblical truth and the way Amelie cries out to Father God for help….
I am not going to tell you any more for fear of spoiling things for you.
I cannot recommend The Starlet Spy highly enough.
I was given a free copy of the book by NetGalley from Barbour Publishing. The opinions in this review are completely my own.

A MOUNTAIN TOO STEEP by ROBIN PATCHIN

A MOUNTAIN TOO STEEP by ROBIN PATCHIN is an exciting romantic thriller, full of twists and turns and unforgettable characters, with a strong Christian message of holding onto faith in God when all seems lost. Family relationships, guilt, sacrifical love, forgiveness and the importance of prayer, are subjects that are sensitively portrayed.
The story starts with Camilla Wright, whose husband Daniel was murdered when he testified at Francis Campos’ murder trial, hearing that her son Jeremy and his cousin Evan are in hospital in Utah after a life threatening accident.
I like the way the story is interspersed with letters from Daniel writen to Camilla while he was waiting to testify. This helps us understand their relationship.
Does this accident have anything to do with her husband’s murder, and who is the mysterious man who saved the boys’ lives?……
I cannot recommend this thrilling and inspirational book strongly enough.

THE PEASANT KING by TESSA AFSHAR

Publication date 7/11/23
THE PEASANT KING is another beautiful Biblical fiction novel  by TESSA AFSHAR which comes after The Hidden Price. However the book can easily stand alone.
It is the eighth year of King Cyrus’ reign on the Persian throne and he is in the middle of an ongoing war with Astyages, the wicked Median king, who is also his grandfather. Keren and Jared are Hebrews who work closely with Cyrus, having even saved his life. They strongly believe that the Lord will use Cyrus to set their nation free. As this quore explains, “God’s plans for the world are somehow entwined with Judah’s destiny. Which makes God’s plans for Cyrus crucial to the fate of the world”. I love the way the author starts every chapter with relevant Scripture verses, for example the verses about Cyrus in Isaiah 44:24 and 28, as she reminds us of Biblical prophecy.
Keren is the king’s chief scribe who has passed her skills on to her twin children, Johanan and Jemmah. Johanan is brilliantly clever, whilst Jemmah is beautiful and caring.
Asher is the illegitimate son of Astyarges. He is hated by his father and the feeling is mutual.
The story is very exciting as we follow Jemmah and her adopted sister Zarina as they travel to Media to try and find their kidnapped mother. This is where they meet Asher…..
I am not going to tell you any more for fear of spoiling things for you.
There is war, there are secrets, there is betrayal, forgiveness, love and compassion, a sense of family and belonging to a man who felt he belonged nowhere, and a wonderful variety of characters, both Biblical and fictional, against the backdrop of life in ancient Persia, Media and Babylon, in this well researched and lovely read. I cannot recommend The Peasant King highly enough.
I was given a free copy of the book by NetGalley from Tyndale House Publishers. The opinions in this review are completely my own.

A BEAUTIFUL DISGUISE by ROSEANNA M WHITE

Publication date 22/8/23
I have read many novels  by ROSEANNA M WHITE, with great enjoyment, but
A BEAUTIFUL DISGUISE is now my absolute favurite, with the wonderful parade of characters, both human and animal, the intrigue, the setting in Edwardian England with the gossip and prejudice of the”ton”, and the cleverness and vibrancy of the members of The Imposters Ltd, who hold many secrets about the aristocracy. Things are most definitely not as they seem.
The strong Christian message really pleases me, especially as the author speaks of being led by God’s Holy Spirit and of being drawn to people of a like mind. The camaraderie amongst the Imposter “family” is delightful and  I cannot wait for the next book in the series.  There is humour, even as serious issues are brought into the story.
Lady Marigold Fairfax, who hides her real self behind outlandish fashion and feathers, is amazed when Sir Merritt Livingstone sees through her disguises…..
I am not going to tell you any more for fear of spoiling things for you.
I cannot recommend A Beautiful Disguise highly enough to anyone who enjoys this genre.
I was given a free copy of the book by NetGalley from Bethany House Publishers. The opinions in this review are completely my own.

VOICE OF THE ANCIENT by CONNILYN COSSETTE

Publication date 15/8/23
CONNILYN COSSETTE has done it again with VOICE OF THE ANCIENT, the first novel in her The King’s Men series! The story takes place in 1043BC and is based on 1 Samuel 8:10-22, and goes through Yahweh’s choice of Saul son of Kish as His first anointed king of Israel and Saul’s war against the Amonites. As it was said amongst his supporters, “Our enemies would think twice before going up against such a man”,  Others said, “We can only pray that he will inspire the tribes to put aside long held differences and embrace the Torah as the tie that binds us.”
The characters are beautifully portrayed and the novel is full of biblical truth and wonderful stories about the patriarchs told by Avidan, son of the Levitical song writer, Ronen ben Avidan. After runing away with his cousins to fight in Saul’s army, in spite of the fact that those in Levitical service are banned from going to war, he is disillusioned with the carnage and remembers Yahweh, the One who sees and the One who hears, and leads Keziah to know Him as well.
Keziah has run away from an arranged marriage and Avidan is looking for his youngest cousin who is missing, and the two of them band together in their travels….
It is a story about love, sacrifice, courage and redemption. These words come from one of Ronen’s songs, “The anointed one shall abide by the counsel of the Most High. The voice of the Ancient One to light his step.” …..
I am not going to tell you any more for fear of spoiling things for you.
I cannot recommend this very special read highly enough.
I was given a free copy of the book by NetGalley from Bethany House Publishers. The opinions in this review are completely my own.

THE LOVE SCRIPT by TONI SHILOH

Publication date 1/8/23
THE LOVE SCRIPT is the first novel in the Love in the Spotlight series by TONI SHILOHIt is a most enjoyable read with great characters and a strong Christian message.  I cannot recommend this lovely book highly enough.
Nevaeh Richards is a hair stylist who works in Hollywood. One of her clients is Rosie Booker, Lamont Booker - The Sexiest  Man Alive’s -  mother. When a  photo is taken of Lamont helping Nevaeh down the front steps of his home, his Christian faith is comprmised. They start fake dating at the suggestion of his agent Bryan, and Nevaeh’s life is never the same. Hounded by the paparazzi, abused on line, she loses her job at The Mane Do and has to move out of the apartment she shares with a friend who is trying to use the siruation to her own advantage.
They start really dating in order to get to know one another, and when they develop feelings for one another they each feel convicted that they need to not only repent before God, but come clean no matter the cost to Lamont’s reputation.
I like Nevaeh’s dry wit and the way their dialogue is full of well known quotations from their favourite films. I also like the way their individual relatioships with the Lord are described. I love Ms Rosie, Nevaeh’s parents and Lamont’s two praying friends, who contrast well with the falseness and worldliness in the film industry.
I was given a free copy of the book by NetGalley from Bethany House Publishers. The opinions in this review are completely my own.

COLD PURSUIT by NANCY MEHL

Publication date 11/7/23
Not only is COLD PURSUIT by NANCY MEHL an “unputdownable” thriller with a great plot and unforgettable characters, but it is also rich with character analysis and is based on  a strong Christian message of redemption, God’s protection and the importance of forgiveness. I cannot recommend this novel highly enough to anyone who enjoys this genre.
The story starts with River Ryland and Tony St Clair, behavioural analysts with the F.B.I, being attacked  by the Salt River Strangler. The results of this trauma lead them to leave the F.B.I. and move to St Louis where they open Watson Investigations, a private detective agency. Their first client is Amy Stover whose son Chris disappeared four years previously when he went to a concert with two of his friends. Amy wants to know what happened to her son so she can have closure……
I like to see the friendship between River and Tony and the way they make each other  laugh and are always “there” for each other. I also like to see how Tony relates to River’s mother, who is in the early stages of Altzeimers.
There is so much more to this book but I am not going to tell you any more for fear of spoiling the read for you. I do hope there will be more novels in this series.
I was given a free copy of the book by NetGalley from Bethany House Publishers. The opinions in this review are completely my own.

THE WOMAN FROM LYDIA by ANGELA HUNT

Publicatio date 11/7/23
THE WOMAN FROM LYDIA by ANGELA HUNT is biblical fiction at its best, with solid bible truth showing God’s mercy and redemptive power, together with His protection and deliverance from evil. The characters are beautifully portrayed and I love the way the author has rounded out their stories and has made them seem more real, without in any way interfering with the truth of God’s word.
It is the first novel in the Emissaries  series and starts our in Philippi in AD 50. We come across well known characters such as Paulos (Paul), Silas, Euodia (known as the woman of Lydia), Syntyche  and  the young gitl wtho had a spirit of divination. We see how Euodia and her household, and the body of believers, treated slaves as their brothers and sisters, and how Euodia and her two helpers followed Sabina when she was abducted by Hector, one of her former owners. Ariston, Euodia’s freed steward, is a great addition to the book……
I like the way the author shows us how alike people of AD 50 were to people today and how the ungodly still need deliverance and a relationship with the Lord. I like to see the zeal and courage of the early believers who truly believe, as we should too, that they are slaves to Christ, and are willing to face death to bring people into His kingdom.
The Woman from Lydia is a wonderfully inspirational read, with plenty of excitement and suspense.
I cannot recommend this lovely book highly enough and am looking forward to more novels in the series.
I was given a free copy of the book by NetGalley from Bethany House Publishers. The opinions in this review are compleely my own.

VENGEANCE IN THE MIST by ROBIN PATCHEN

VENGEANCE IN THE MIST follows after Courage in the Shadows in the Coventry series by ROBIN PATCHEN, but it can easily stand alone. It is a fast paced legal thriller in which assistant district attorneys, Misty Lake and Tate Steele, are asked by their employer, District Attorney Leland Humphrey, to work together to clear Misty’s workload. Misty has recently been kidnapped for the second time, and she is now traumatised by her apartment having been broken into and bugged. She feels it could be the work of Freddy Parks who she prosecuted and put in jail, and who has now been let out. He has disappeared, which seems very suspicious.  Misty has always been very independant and starts out resenting Tate as they have to work together, but ends up being very glad for his protection. These two prosecutors have very different ideas about their cases, with Misty wanting to make sure that criminals receive the longest sentences to keep them off the streets, while Tate tends to offer plea bargains and shorter sentences in order to please his boss.  Tate is ambitious whilst Misty is passionate about justice, protecting the weak and putting away violent offenders. Will they be able to put aside their differences and suspicions and become more than friends?…..
I like the way the novel is based on a strong Christian message - the importance of forgiveness and showing mercy and unconditional love, and letting go of the past. I also like the way we feel the characters’ emotions.
There is murder, the disappearance of suspects, and the fraudulent appropriation of funds, with several of the cases they are dealing with seeming to overlap.
We are taken on a real roller coaster ride and are kept guessing right to the end.
I have  enjoyed every novel I have read by this author and Vengeance in the Mist is no exception.
I cannot recomend this thrilling and inspirational read strongly enough.

FACING THE ENEMY by DIANN MILLS

Publication date 5/9/23
I have enjoyed all the novels I have read by DIANN MILLS and FACING THE ENEMY is no exception. This brilliant romantic thriller is also inspirational as the author deals with such topics as unconditional love, forgiveness, courage, and the importance of never separating oneself  from God, who is the “only source of life and healing.” I particularly like the way we are given insight into the characters’ emotions as they battle with grief, guilt and sometimes confusion, as is the case with Carson Lowell, one of Risa’s most talented students.
On the dark side there is murder, human trafficking and the abduction and selling of babies, with crooked lawyers and adoption agencies taking advantage of the most vulnerable.
Risa Jacobs and Gage Patterson are special agents and partners in the Houston FBI but when Risa’s brother Trenton is killed in a hit and run, after pushing her to safety, she feels guilty and leaves the FBI and works as an English professor, pulling away from Gage and her parents to keep them safe…….
There is a great deal more to the story but I am not going to tell you any more for fear of spoiling things for you.
I was given a free copy of the book by NetGalley from Tyndale House Publishers. The opinions in this reiew are completely my own.

FINDING US by TRACIE PETERSON

Publication date 25/7/23
FINDING US is the second novel in the Pictures of the Heart series by TRACIE PETERSON but it can easeily stand alone. The book is full of excitement, suspense, beautiful descriptions, wonerful characters and romance, and also has a strong Christian message.
Bill Reed with his preacher brother Wallace and Wallace’s pregnant wife Amelia are on the City of Canton when it sinks and are separated. The two brothers hear that Amelia is dead and she hears the same of them. We see the very real struggle that Wallace has with God in his grief, and how Bill tris to encourage him.
Eleanor Bennett is working as a Camera girl for Fisher Photography at the Alaska-Yukom-Pacific Exposition and Bill is giving lectures at the Alaska exhibit. They meet and find they have a common interest in plants and become friends over the re-writing of Bill’s book on Alaskan vegetation.
A photogtraph of a young widow with a baby taken by Eleanor sets things in motion - not all of them good…….
I am not going to tell you any more for fear of spoiling things for you.
I cannot recommend Finding Us strongly enough.
I was given a freecopy of the book by NetGalley from Bethany House Publishers. The opinions in this review are completely my own.

THE HEART’S CHOICE by TRACIE PETERSON and KIMBERLEY WOODHOUSE

Publication date 16/5/23
THE HEART’S CHOICE is a beautifully written historical novel by TRACIE PETERSON and KIMBERLEY WOODHOUSE which will really stay with you long after you have finished the last page. Full of wonderful characters whose relationship with the Lord undergirds the story, and with the inevitable villain with his lies and betrayal, a slow moving romance, family love and friendship, you will find all you need for a most enjoyable and inspirational read.
In 1904, Mark Andrews, lover of books and education, obtains the position of a lifetime as head of the brand new Carnegie library in Montana, near the family ranch, which is his father’s pride and joy. Someone else who moves into the area to pursue her dream job as the first female court stenographer in the whole of Monrana, is Rebecca Whitman, also a lover of books.
I love old Angus Andrews, once he mellows, and Judge Milton Ashbury and his feisty wife Marvella who are like parents to Mark and pretty soon add Rebecca to their “family”.
Added to all this there is courtroom drama and a desperate race to save an innocent man’s life.
I cannot recommend The Heart’s Choice (such a fitting title by the way) strongly enough.
I was given a free copy of the book by NetGalley from Bethany House Publishers. The opinions in this review are completely my own.

MAN OF SHADOW AND MIST by MICHELLE GRIEP

Publication date 1/6/23
MAN OF SHADOW AND MIST is another exceptional novel by MICHELLE GRIEP that I guarantee you will not be able to put down. The story takes place in Whitby, England, in the late nineteenth century, with Sir James Morgan returning to the bleak Morgrave Manor where his mother lies dying of a horrific disease which may well be his fate in the future. He has never had a close relationship with his mother but is willing to try anything to save her life. James has a deep faith in God but none at all in the church members and people in general who look upon him and his family as vampires. He is satisfied to live in solitude until he meets the beautiful and compassionate librarian, Rosa Edwards, whose aim in life is to educate the people of Whitby who are so caught up in superstition.
The book has all the darkness of a Gothic novel, but we see how the Lord brings light and hope into the story, and how He comes through for Rosa, protecting her from harm. ….
I do not want to tell you any more for fear of spoiling things for you, but this book has everything that makes up an exciting and inspirational read - unforgettable characters, a passionate love story, a spurned suitor, wrongful accusation, violence, and very strange happenings, all enveloped in a strong Christian message.
I cannot recommend Man of Shadow and Mist strongly enough.
I was given a free copy of the book by NetGalley from Barbour Publishing. The opinions in this review are completely my own.

FAIREST of HEART by KAREN WITEMEYER

Publication date 6/6/23
FAIREST of HEART is the first novel in the Texas Ever After series  by KAREN WITEMEYER. It is a delightful read with unforgettable characters, an exciting plot,, a sweet romance, and a story reminiscent of Snow White  and the seven dwarfs. The book is bible based and full of hope, with scripture verses such as John 16:33 “In the world ye shall have tribulation; but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world,” underlying the story.
Penelope Snow is an orphan who longs for a family and a place she can call home. After suffering abuse at the hands of Narcissa LaBelle and her sidekick Cecil Hunt, and being accused of theft, she is questioned by Ranger Titus Kingsley, who is inclined to believe these lies, because of what happened to his brother Nate…….
There is a lot more to this novel but I do not want to tell you any more for fear of spoiling the read for you.
I cannot recommend this lovely book highly enough.
I was given a free copy of the book by NetGalley from Bethany House Publishers. The opinions in this review are completely my own.

INDIGO ISLE by T I LOWE

Publication date 6/6/23
INDIGO ISLE by T I LOWE is one of the loveliest and most inspirational romance novels I have read this year, and I cannot recommend it highly enough for the unforgettable characters, the interesting plot and the great Christian message based on this scripture in Ezekiel 34:16; “I will search for My lost ones who have strayed away, and I will bring them safely home again.” It is a story of redemption and second chances, where broken people help each other to find their way to wholeness.
When Sonny Bates, a location scout for the film indudtry, lands on the supposedly haunted private island, Indigo Isle, looking for a filming site, she is not at all put off by the unwelcoming and angry Hudson Renfrow, known as the Monster of Indigo Isle, even though he calls the police on her! In spite of being chased off the island, she keeps going back, until an unusual friendship develops between two people who find it hard to forgive themselves for past mistakes…..…
The story is beautifully told and I do not want to spoil things for you by telling you too much. I love the dialogue between the characters, which is often amusing and always tells us more about them.
I was given a free copy of the book by NetGalley from Tyndale House Publishers. The opinions in this review are completely my own.

BREAK OF DAY by COLLEEN COBLE

Publication date 4/7/23
BREAK OF DAY is the final novel in the Annie Pederson trilogy by COLLEEN COBLE and I am really sad to say goodbye to Annie, Jon Durham and their eight year old daughter Kylie, to name a few of the inhabitants of Rock Harbor, where Annie is a law enforcement officer. Whilst the novel can stand alone I suggest you read the series in order for pure pleasure.
This spine chilling roller coaster of a story, which shows the inhumanity of man at his worst, will keep you guessing until the end - will Annie and Jon have their “happily ever after” and will Annie get the chance to reconcile with her siser Sarah?……
I am not going to tell you any more as I do not want to spoil things for you.
I found Break of Day, with its well worked out plot, interesting characters, and strong Christian message of overcoming fear, an exciting and inspirational read, and cannot recommend the novel highly enough.
I was given a free copy of the book by NetGalley from Thomas Nelson, The opinions in this review are completely my own.

COURAGE IN THE SHADOWS by ROBIN PATCHEN

COURAGE IN THE SHADOWS is the latest novel in the Coventry Saga by ROBIN PATCHEN, but it can easily stand alone. It is a fast paced roller coaster ride, with unforgettable characters (some of whom are unforgettable for the wrong reason), an interesting romance and a strong Christian message - everything you need for an enjoyable read.
When Summer Lake recognizes the voice of the man who kidnapped and terrorized her seven years ago, she follows him into the parking lot, much to her partner Grant Wright’s horror. This sets in motion a search for Vasco Ramon, head of a Mexican drug and human trafficking cartel.
Summer is a co-owner of the Green Beret Protection Agency, where she and Grant work as guards. She hates to be seen as weak and does not trust easily due to growing up with an abusive father. She is afraid of becoming attached to anyone, as she sees everyone who has meant anything to her abandoning her She has recently given her life to the Lord and is starting out on her Christian walk.
Grant joined the army and trained as a Green Beret with Summer’s cousin Jon. He keeps away from his family because of the guilt he feels for his brother Bryan’s accident. He finds the work at GBPA boring, but has been in love with Summer for seven years, since he rescued her, and is determined to protect her….
I am not going to tell you any more for fear of spoiling things for you.
I cannot recommend Courage in the Shadows highly enough.

THE LIBYAN DIVERSION by JOEL C ROSENBERG

Publication date 16/5/23
THE LIBYAN DIVERSION by JOEL C ROSENBERG is a political thriller which will keep you on the edge of your chair! It is the fifth novel in the Markus Ryker series, and, although it can easily stand alone, I am glad that I have read them all. It is a story of courage and determination in the face of evil, of betrayal, false accusations and bad choices made by those in authority. This author has an incredible knowledge of American and Middle Eastern politics and the book  is very relevant to the times in which we live.
Marcus Ryker has hardly recovered from the beatings and torture he experienced, when he is called upon to lead his team once agan. After an attack that seems to have gone terribly wrong and for which he is blamed, he is aproached by the president to come back and find and destroy “The Libyan” and the other Kairos operatives……
There is an element of faith, much intrigue  and some romance. I found the novel interesting, gripping and inspirational.
I cannot reommend The Libyan Diversion highly enough to anyone who enjoys this genre.
I was given a free copy of the book by NetGalley from Tyndale House Publishers The opinions in this revew are completely my own.

DOUBLE INDEMNITY by ROBERT WHITLOW

Publication date 6/6/23
DOUBLE INDEMNITY is another brilliant legal drama by ROBERT WHITLOW, with a plot that will keep you guessing, some interesting characters and a Christian message that will really touch your heart. The story takes place in Bryson, a town in the foorhills of the Appalachian Mountains, which gives rise to some lovely descriptions.
When businessman, Matt Thompson, dies in a hunting accident at the hunt organized by his firm at the Burnt Pine Tree Lodge, both Connor Grantham and Liz Acosta become involved with his feisty second wife, Elena, Connor as the pastor who has been giving the couple marriage counselling, and Liz as her lawyer. Elena does not trust anyone, particularly Matt’s first wife Anne, who has custody of his children, and his business partner Winston Boone. She seems more interested in the money that is due to her from his life insurance than is normal for a grieving widow……

THE TAPESTRY OF GRACE by KIM VOGEL SAWYER

Pulication date 18/4/23
THE TAPESTRY OF GRACE by KIM VOGEL SAWYER is a beautifully written historical romance novel with a great Christian message on grace, restoration of relationships and sacrificial love, based on Hebrews 4:16, “Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need” and Romans 8:28 that says that God can bring good out of all things.
The story takes place in Alexandertol, Kansas, in 1895 with Martina Krahn starting a Frauenverein to help needy members in their Mennonite community. She soon develops an ulterior motive, hoping to draw her husband out of his misery. Augusta Dyck, a widowed school teacher, starts off on the wrong foot when she tells widower, Konrad Rempel, that he needs help with his twin sons, Volker and Walden. He eventually admits to her that his boys need a mother and asks if the Frauenverein ladies can help him find a suitable wife. When the ladies refuse, saying that matchmaking is not part of their agenda, Augusta takes it upon herself to find a suitable wife for him…..
This is a story of broken people gradually forming friendships that lead to the healing of broken relationships.
The Tapestry of Grace is a really good title for the book which I found most enjoyable and inspirational. I cannot recommend the novel highly enough.
I was given a free copy of the book by NetGalley from WaterBrooke & Multnomah. The opinions in this review are completely my own.
